The British University in Egypt (BUE) was established in 1998 as a result of a Memorandum of Cooperation between the UK and Egyptian Governments. The aim was to create an institution that would produce graduates meeting UK standards for strategic sectors of the Egyptian economy, such as engineering, computer science, and business studies.

Financial support for the university came from a group of prominent Egyptian business and public figures, with Mr. Farid Khamis, the Chairman of Oriental Weavers, playing a key role.
